Water — in Maasai *engarre* — runs through almost all of our projects. Access to clean drinking water is, for us, one of the basic necessities without which life simply doesn’t work, especially when it comes to children.
Water for the School
Children in Africa often walk several kilometers to school. If the school has a rainwater tank, they can drink during the day. If the tank is empty — which is completely normal during the dry season — they walk home thirsty, in the heat. Some carry water in old plastic bottles — sometimes tea, sometimes water straight from the lake. And that is the problem. Untreated lake water is not safe, which is why we consider rainwater harvesting and water purification projects essential for the health of children in the community.
The goal of this project is to install gutters on the school and other suitable buildings in the village, so rainwater can be collected and made available to children throughout the day. While rainwater is not perfect, it is significantly cleaner than lake water and is considered good drinking water by local people. If you decide to support this project, we will be very grateful.
Funds are invested gradually, exactly as with our other projects. After repairing the school roof, it took several months to raise money for the next phase — installing gutters and repairing two old concrete tanks that were leaking. We purchased new gutters and a special waterproof cement mix in the nearest town, and, as always, the work was carried out by local men.
